Story
The mischievous thief, Chris Pine, is joining hands with a set of unlikely allies for an epic mission to recover the missing relic. Things take a dangerous turn when they meet the wrong people from whom they are trying to escape. The upcoming movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will bring the colorful world and comical spirit of a renowned role-playing game to the big screens in a thrilling and humorous adventure.
You do not have to know the references to understand Honor Among Thieves. The movie is simple enough to be understood, even if you do not understand the jargon. It, however, does not excuse other flaws the film has. The storyline is very predictable as a franchise that usually attempts to be creative; most of its characters also feel underdeveloped since it covers too much in such little time.
Review
In the first five minutes, Paramount’s Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie clarifies that it understands its audience and that no prior D&D experience is necessary. One could be forgiven for expecting another long-winded fantasy movie that would either fail to satisfy D&D fans or be too hard for non-fans to understand, similar to past cinematic attempts.
However, Directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have succeeded in creating a movie accessible to everyone while still staying true to the original source material. The movie successfully captures the spirit of Dungeons & Dragons without being too nerdy or embarrassing. It is conscious of its source material, incorporating recognizable elements from the fantasy roleplaying game without being overly self-referential.
It’s absolutely fitting that at the core of the movie is a message about the significance of making families and how powerful those bonds can be. The cheerful disposition of the cast, the underlying compassion, and the focus on entertainment make this a movie that represents the brand brilliantly, which might even encourage some people to explore tabletop games.
