The Silent Start (1940s-1980s)

The Hollywood movies have reached to India since the 1940s. They were mostly displayed in metro cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai and were made to be viewed by the English speaking English elites, expatriates and college-goers.Other popular movies then included the Ben-Hur (1959), the Ten Commandments (1956) and Gone With The Wind (1939).

The rise of video cassette culture (1980s-1990s)

Next it was the VCR period and all is different. All of a sudden, ill-gotten pirated tapes and “video libraries were distributing American blockbusters to remote places, including the small towns. Children watched Rambo, Terminator, Rocky and Bruce Lee films with grainy pictures on televisions in the living room.

Such movies were popular in India as the E.T. (1982), Jaws (1975), The Godfather (1972) and Die Hard (1988). The heroes in the English movies were Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone.

Titanic (1997)

James Cameron‘s Titanic (1997) was, perhaps, the only film that really changed the stakes at Hollywood in India. Titanic, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, was first of all a blockbuster as well as a love story. It ran over 25 weeks in Indian cinemas grossing over 55 crores. This was an enormous figure then of a foreign-language film.
