Plot Overview
The movie opens with the protagonist who is played by Dhruva Vaayu an average family man with no exceptional features in his life. Stubborn, practical, and honest, he can also get rude, and is the kind of person who will deny everything concerning faith, or superstitions and even biological aspects.
But out of blue things change and there comes the twist of the plot when a set of bizarre and horrific incidents succeed to touch the fabric of his reality.
Cinematic Excellence
“Kalinga” is a film with grade A technical features. Akshay Ram Podishetti’s camera work primarily features the dark warmth of the village in comparison to the anguish of the beast.
Every single line in every scene of the film has been carefully built up with horror and nail biting suspense to make sure the viewers get more interested in the story.
The ‘suspense’ in the film is managed well through cut shots by Naresh Venuvanka, ensuring that there are no unnecessary durations in the film including slow moments that do little to progress the film.
The DI Colorist, Aryan Mouli, is praised for the work he has done with respect to the visual appeal of the film. The color adds particularly to the bleak and eerie ambiance of the film and enhances the horror factors.
Vishnu Sekhara’s music is yet another added positive advantage of the film. The background score is a plus especially to the picture, further intensifying the fear and the horror. There are also scenes that are completely quiet and mostly these scenes allow the audience to sense the tension and fear of the characters.
Review
“Kalinga” is perhaps a remarkable entry to the existing list of horror films in Telugu cinema. There is such a composition of the film, such performances and such technical work where inclusive of thrilling story, other elements rest the viewers mind because of the frightening creature which would stay even after the end credits.
It is a horror film that deals with fear of the unknown, dread of the supernatural and a boundary that separates reality from fantasy as it should be ideal for horror genre lovers.
Dhruva Vaayu is a dual threat director/ lead with very convincing performances by portraying his character with subtlety.
And, Pragya Nayan and rest of the support cast bring the emotional weight to the film and transforms Kalinga from being solely a horror film, to a tale of bravery and courage against fear and the unseen.
