Direction
Paul King, the director of Paddington’s two movies, was right to be director of Wonka. His narrative techniques deliver a lovely blend of heart, humor and visual appeal. King is careful not to make this a dreary origin story, and instead infuses it with magic whimsy, visual verve, and plenty of emotional heft.
Cast
The decision to cast Timothée Chalamet as the young Wonka elicited some head-scratching at first, but once you witness him in action, you’ll understand exactly why he was chosen for the role. Chalamet gets Wonka’s kookie charm, his youthful enthusiasm, and that little flutter of the mischievous that makes him endearing and a little delicious.
He is joined by the perpetually brilliant Olivia Colman, who plays one of the film’s villains with classic cinematic wickedness. Her contributions are nothing short of evil, with a group of obstacles to create for Wonka to traverse and kept us laughing with her timing, theater control and dominating the screen.
The supporting cast, however, infuses plenty of life into the story, with an array of engaging characters who round out Wonka’s world of candy-coated visions.
Music
The film’s score comes from Joby Talbot, who combines light, frolicsome melodies with towering orchestration that reflects the fun and sentiment of Wonka’s journey.
The music almost becomes its own character — uplifting the festive scenes with catchy tunes to adding some tenderness to the film’s rawer emotional ones. Whether writing a high-energy number for when Wonka is experimenting with candy, or a soft background piece during scenes when he’s struggling, Talbot’s score serves every scene beautifully.
Production
Wonka is produced by Alexandra Derbyshire, David Heyman and Luke Kelly for Heyday Films, The Roald Dahl Story Company and Village Roadshow Pictures. The film is polished, scaled and detailed with all of the finery it needs to play with the big boys of Hollywood fantasy adventure.
All the visual elements are top-notch production: the magnificent sets are crammed with jaw-dropping candy inventions, the costumes are lushly detailed, practically whooping with color. The film’s world is lived-in, magical and fully immersive — it takes audiences right into the pages of Roald Dahl’s imagination.
Visuals and Cinematography
The cinematography of Wonka is such a visual feast. Every frame is bursting with color, texture, and ornate set design that you want to pause and just soak it in. The candy shops, fantastical contraptions and larger-than-life sets are the stuff of storybooks.
Paul King’s team conjures in magical excess a psychedelic universe of such candy-floss haziness that anything appears possible there — from floating chocolates to rivers of caramel — while simultaneously making it all feel utterly credible within the realms of fantasy.
Story
In this Willy adaptation, Paul King has written an original storyline about the chocolatier, including his early escapades and friendship with Oompa-Loompas to reveal more about the world of confectionary that Wonka created.
With their combined powers, they go on quests and make delicious enchanted treats! As it unfolds on our screens, we’ll get to experience the charisma of Wonka and his mystic world of goodies!
Review
Paul King directed the two Paddington movies. His aesthetic is exactly what separates this prequel from the others. Timothee Chalamet brings his signature talents to the role of Willy & the Chocolate Factory.
Willy Wonka & Johnny Depp returned to play Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 2005 in an earlier adaptation of Dahl’s book of the same name. This demonstrates their commitment to modernizing the classic tale of Dahl.
